Automatic OG & featured images for WordPress

Every share, camera-ready. Finally.

Your content deserves more than a blank link preview. ThumbnailWP generates a branded featured and social image automatically, the moment you publish — no design tool, no manual export, no code required.

Why it matters

A link without a good preview is a link people scroll past.

Most site owners never think about this — until they notice their own posts show up blank on Facebook, while a competitor's look far more clickable.

What is happening

When you share a link, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn look for an image tag to know what to show. If your theme doesn't set one properly, they either show nothing, or grab a random image from your content — often the wrong one.

The generated image

ThumbnailWP renders a real image server-side — your post title, a background, your branding — sized exactly to what each platform expects. Not a screenshot, not a guess.

The real payoff

Posts shared with a real, branded image get clicked far more than a blank link or a broken preview. It's the difference between looking professional and looking like nobody bothered — right in the feed, before anyone even visits your site.

Platform requirements

Every platform has its own exact image size and ratio — get it wrong and your preview gets cropped or rejected. ThumbnailWP generates at the right dimensions for each context automatically, so you never have to track platform specs yourself.

With vs. Without ThumbnailWP

Without ThumbnailWP With ThumbnailWP
What gets shared A blank preview, or a random image guessed from your content A real, designed image — built for that exact post
Link preview No image, or whatever gets grabbed by default — different every time Title, background, and branding, sized exactly right for each platform
Keeping content current A new image designed by hand for every single post Generated automatically the moment you publish — every post, every time
Confidence Hope the theme’s default image looks okay Built to the exact size every platform expects — tested, not guessed
Privacy Depends on the tool 100% local — nothing sent to a third-party service

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

ThumbnailWP renders every image locally with a dual GD/Imagick engine, pulls real content from your post, Meta Box, and ACF fields, and writes the result directly into Yoast, RankMath, SEOPress, The SEO Framework, and Squirrly SEO‘s own image fields. It generates automatically on publish, in bulk for existing content, or on demand — and never sends your data anywhere.

  • Every dynamic tag you need

Post title, excerpt, date, author, site name, category, featured image, site logo, site icon, author photo, or any Meta Box/ACF field — pull real content into your template, nothing hardcoded.

  • Your native data

Native Meta Box and ACF support: your existing custom fields are pulled directly into your templates. Nothing duplicated, nothing to re-type.

  • Real platform compliance

Every image is rendered at the exact size each platform expects — 1200×630 for Facebook/LinkedIn, matching ratios for Twitter/X. Not a guess, not a generic square crop.

  • No SEO conflicts

Automatic detection of Yoast, RankMath, SEOPress, The SEO Framework, and Squirrly SEO — ThumbnailWP writes the generated image directly into their own fields, never overwriting a value already set.

  • Scriptable via WP-CLI

A dedicated WP-CLI command for headless or scheduled generation — regenerate images for your whole catalogue from a script, a cron job, or a CI pipeline, no admin screen required.

  • 100% GDPR

100% local — the same standard as everything else you use. No external API calls, no CDN, no telemetry. Your data never leaves your server.

  • Keeps your media library clean

Every regenerated or permanently deleted post's old image is removed automatically — never an orphaned file piling up, unless you uploaded it yourself.

  • Translation-ready

Built on WordPress's standard translation system from day one — ready for full French and Spanish coverage as it's completed, without any core changes needed.

  • Works on any host

Imagick when available, GD as a universal fallback — identical behavior on both. No dependency on your hosting plan's extensions.

5 deep dives

What the table doesn't show

Dynamic tags

Hides a real gap

A fixed list of 4-5 built-in placeholders (title, date, author...) isn't the same as being able to pull ANY Meta Box or ACF field on the post — or the author's own profile. The more precise the source, the less you have to fight the template to say what you actually mean.

Image & displays correctly

2 different things — almost nobody says so

A generated image existing isn't the same as a platform actually displaying it — Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter each reject or badly crop images that don't match their real minimum size and ratio. ThumbnailWP renders at those exact dimensions per platform family, not a single generic square.

Coexisting with Yoast

Isn't the same as resolving the conflict

A plugin can claim to "work with Yoast" simply by generating an image and hoping for the best — leaving it unclear which image actually wins. ThumbnailWP writes directly into Yoast's, RankMath's, SEOPress's, TSF's, and Squirrly's own social-image fields, and only ever fills them if they're empty — never overwriting a value you or the SEO plugin already set.

Zero trace after uninstall

Rarer than you'd think

Plenty of WordPress plugins leave leftovers in the database after removal: orphaned options, generated files never cleaned up. ThumbnailWP lets you choose exactly what happens on uninstall — keep everything, remove settings only, or remove settings and every generated image — genuinely, not just in theory.

No AI

On purpose, not by omission

A well-known competitor in this space leans on an AI assistant to help design your image — convenient, but it means an ongoing API cost, and your content going through a third-party service. ThumbnailWP makes a different, deliberate choice: everything renders locally, on your own server, with nothing ever transmitted to a third party. Less flashy on the first click, but no hidden subscription, no data ever leaving your site.
